Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the quantitative role of the mesenchyme during its interaction with epithelium, using the mouse embryonic lung in organ culture as a model system. By maintaining the epithelium in association with different amounts of mesenchyme it was shown, using histological and ultrastructural criteria, that not only epithelial growth and morphogenesis but also the form of epithelial cytodifferentiation were dependent on the amount of mesenchyme present. Furthermore, it was shown that a minimum quantity of mesenchyme was necessary for epithelial cell maintenance and that larger minimum quantities of mesenchyme were necessary for each of the three aspects of epithelial development studied: growth, morphogenesis, and cytodifferentiation.
