Abstract

The adsorption of multilayers of CO on a Cu(100) surface at 10 K has been studied by LEED and infrared spectroscopy. By starting from an ordered chemisorbed CO monolayer, it was possible to grow a three-dimensional crystal with hexagonal planes parallel to the surface and with a lattice constant much larger than that of the ordinary $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-phase CO solid.
