Abstract

The (111)-oriented spinel Li0.5Fe2.5O4 film has been epitaxially grown on SrTiO3(001) substrate with an orientation relationship of [1¯ 10](111)film//[1¯ 10](001)substrate. Using advanced electron microscopy, the interface of SrO − terminated SrTiO3(001) substrate facing Fe atomic plane of Li0.5Fe2.5O4 film has been revealed and the heteroepitaxy in terms of the coincidence-site lattice model has been proposed. Additionally, domain/grain boundaries form within the film, which together with interfacial dislocations contribute to strain relaxation in the heterosystem. The results provide a better understanding of the interface structure, strain relaxation, and heteroepitaxy in the spinel(111)/perovskite(001) heterosystems.
