Abstract

Reports of short stature in young gymnasts and flexion contractures in the elbows of junior baseballers have long troubled the parents of young athletes. It is important for health professionals and coaches dealing with child athletes to have a good understanding of the unique characteristics of the immature skeleton when prescribing training loads and assessing injuries in children. The existence of epiphyses and apophyses mean that identical insults in adults and children will produce quite different pathologies.
