Abstract

SUMMARY Epiphyseal injury, even though incurred in sports, is no more common than in other recreational activities. Organized sports should provide a critical preparticipation physical examination of the child athlete, appropriate rules, and necessary rule revisions to protect young athletes. Record-keeping and assessment of injuries occurring in adolescence should be regularly analyzed to provide recommendations to allow safe participation. The standards for dealing with the injured adolescent athlete are: (1) early recognition of injury, (2) realization that an injury around a joint in a child may be epiphyseal and not just a “sprain,” (3) proper treatment, and (4) rehabilitation and reassessment after healing before allowing a return to vigorous activity.
