Abstract
This concluding chapter traces the role of the Moody Bible Institute (MBI) in the continuing developments of modern conservative evangelicalism. The MBI has continued to wrestle with the difficulties of maintaining a pristine reputation for “pure religion” amid the completely free market of religion. Yet the MBI's influence has waned over the years, although the future existence of the school that D. L. Moody founded does not appear to be in serious jeopardy. However, it seems unlikely that it will ever achieve something approaching its former glory. Having pioneered the techniques for establishing religious authority out of nothing, it is now a victim of its own success.
