Abstract

AbstractThe Epilogue brings the study to a close by summarizing the key arguments of each chapter in this book. It offers the author’s views on the nature and scope of the intertextual relationship between the three major Flavian epics (Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica, Staitus’ Thebaid, and Silius Italicus’ Punica) and identifies further links and contrasts between the Flavian epicists in their poetic treatment of fear, tyranny, and the passions. The Epilogue also provides a quick comparative overview of the poets’ scale of engagement with Stoic thought, ponders the multifaceted influence of Seneca, and finally opens up the discussion to suggest further lines of enquiry.
