Abstract

This chapter discusses the history of homosexuality in China, and events in the 1990s that signaled a new phase in the discourse on homosexuality in Mainland China. These include the publication of the first sociological study of Beijing's gay subculture Their World, the rise of gay political activism, the decriminalization of homosexuality, and the removal of homosexuality from the list of the Chinese Classification and Diagnostic Criteria of Mental Disorders. The chapter also expresses hope that the rediscovery of the record of homosexuality in premodern China can help increase the historical awareness and inspire the political action of today.
