Abstract

This book opened with a survey of ecological principles for nature conservation derived partly from general ecological theory. Conservation problems were then surveyed for a large number of boreal and temperate environments, with an analysis of the applicability and utility of present ecological theory in relation to such problems. The authors were well aware of modern developments in ecological theory and had also prepared themselves in several seminars together with more theoretically inclined ecologists. Their experience suggests that present theory is fairly limited in its ability to solve pressing conservation problems.
