Abstract
At the end of this book, it would seem appropriate to look back and see how the various contributions relate to the results and conclusions of the Leiden project, which are presented in the opening chapter. Here we have to bear in mind that the nature of the contributions differs: some authors have reacted to elements of our essay; others have offered their insights on the basis of their own research, whether it is concerned with additional sources regarding the Syriac Orthodox community, or whether it relates to some of the other Christian communities of the Middle East. However, central to all the contributions is the question 'Can a religious choice indeed be the starting point for an ethnic community and eventually even a nation, or should we assume that the Christian communities of the Middle East have always been of an ethnic nature?'.
