Abstract

Epilepsy is mentioned in various ways in many literary works, and the study of these can reveal new and enlightening aspects of this condition. One of the most irritating problems for people with epilepsy is the disruption of the continuum of self-awareness by seizures and to accept that in a seizure they may act in ways which provoke even strong reactions from others but which they know nothing of. In consequence, the experiences at seizure onset which are called aura are precious to many patients because during them perception of oneself and the world is preserved.
