Abstract

We appreciate the favourable assessment of our review by Bamidele Rabiu and thank him for his insightful comments. We fully concur with the comment on the confounding presence of sickle cell disease in patients of African descent who simultaneously develop a spinal epidural abscess. In such patients, back pain might be misdiagnosed as a vaso-occlusive crisis, thereby delaying diagnosis until neurological dys-function or worsening bacteraemia or sepsis is detected. The co-presentation of sickle cell disease and epidural abscess, although rare, has been reported previously in children, and Salmonella seems to be the predominant cause of the abscess.
