Abstract

FROM the hair of red mongrel dogs and New Zealand red rabbits we have extracted iron pigments which in most respects are similar to the pigments isolated before from red human hair (trichosiderin)1–3 and Rhode Island Red chicken feathers (feather siderin)3,4. These findings suggest that iron compounds play a central part in certain types of red pigmentation. To facilitate studies in other species, a general description of these pigments is presented.
