Abstract

The terminal abdominal segments of Heliothis virescens (F.) have two areas of glandular tissue which may function in the production of a volatile sex pheromone. The first area, located in the intersegmental membrane between abdominal segments 8 and 9 + 10, has the form of a ventrolateral chevron. The second area, situated in the dorsal valves (papillae annales), is composed of columnar epidermal cells like those in the intersegmental membrane and of trichogenous glands associated with tubular setae.
