Abstract

To describe epidemiological and clinical characteristics of early syphilis among patients who attended City Institute for Skin and Venereal Diseases in Belgrade in 2010. Methods: A case-note review. Results: From January to October 2010, 26 cases of syphilis were diagnosed [13 (50.0%) primary, 10 (38.5%) secondary and 3 (11.5%) early latent syphilis]. 22 (84.6%) were homosexual, 2 (7.7%) bisexual and 1 (3.8%) heterosexual men, and one (3.8%) case was female sex worker. In the majority of cases the infection had been acquired in Belgrade, and in 19/26 (73.1%) cases oral sex had been the only risk factor. Five cases had been coinfected with HIV. Conclusion: Characteristics of syphilis among men who have sex with men demonstrated the need for enhanced prevention methods. Risk reduction messages are more than ever necessary for targeting this group, and condom use for oral sex should be an important part of patients counseling.
