Abstract

Lichen amyloidosus, a localized, primary, cutaneous amyloidosis, is a rare skin disorder in Europe 1,2 and North America 3 but is common in South East Asia 4–8 and some South American countries. 9–10 After the earlier reports in the 1970's from Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, the largest series from this region is that of 265 cases seen in Middle Road Hospital, a government dermatologic hospital in Singapore. This was recently presented at the 17th World Congress of Dermatology, Berlin, May 1987. The annual incidence of this condition in Middle Road Hospital, Singapore, was consistent at 0.4% from 1984 to 1986. In this chapter I shall compare the epidemiologic features of the condition based on published and presented reports from Southeast Asia.
