India has a population capacity of 1.2 billion people. With a worldwide aging population, the prevention and management of osteoporosis has become a significant healthcare challenge. It is crucial to recognize the factors impacting poor bone health and appreciate the many hurdles to treat the disease to provide a better quality of life and decrease the financial burden on healthcare. In this review article, we discuss the epidemiology of osteoporosis and address the definition, incidence, and prevalence, geographical variation in the occurrence of osteoporosis, and the risk factors for osteoporosis. Search terms using various combinations of the keywords 'osteoporosis,' 'epidemiology,' 'incidence,' 'prevalence,' 'fracture,' 'India,' 'world,' 'screening,' and 'FRAX' was done to review all relevant literature till June 2023.
