Abstract

This chapter reviews current American drinking patterns and the prevalence of problems resulting from alcohol use. The general population is discussed first. Then a look at five subgroups within the population is presented. These groups are older adults, adolescents, women, Blacks, and Hispanics. For the general population as well as each of the five subgroups, the prospects regarding treatment outcome are discussed.
