Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical characteristics and epidemiology of children's ocular trauma in Liaocheng City.Methods This retrospective study used data from 617 children hospitalized for ocular trauma in 3 hospitals of Liaocheng City from June 2010 to June 2012.Results The gender ratio in the 617 patients was 4.77:1 with more boys than girls.The constituent ratios of children in the total eye trauma patients were 17.13%,20.12% and 23.45% in 3 hospital respectively,mean 20.23%.The ratio to the whole children patients was 41.23%.The most common traumatic causes were fireworks and firecrackers,peashooter,popgun.The most common types were perforating injuries,followed by eye contusion.Trauma happened mostly during January to February.Traumatic cataract,vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment were the most common complications after trauma.As for surgery,vitreo-retinal surgery was the most most common one,followed by cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation.The prognosis for children eye trauma was not so satisfactory and many children were blind at last.Conclusion Eye trauma in children is a common disease and has many complications.So it is very important to provide more education about preventing eye trauma in children.
