Abstract

THIS paper is based on five surveys Tsponsored by the World Health Organization in Ceylon, India, Iran, Nigeria, and the Sudan, and one survey in India sponsored by the United States Public Health Service. This last one is included here because it was carried out at the same time as-and in close coordination with-the WHO survey in India. All surveys were conducted from 1957 until 1963. The main purpose of these epidemiological studies was to assay the status of periodontal health in various parts of the world. At the same time, a number of alleged etiologic factors were recorded and studied for possible associations with patterns of prevalence and severity of the periodontal disease. In compliance with the traditional role of WHO in preventive medicine, it was hoped that information concerning the etiology and nature of chronic periodontal disease thus gained would be applicable to prevention and treatment on a worldwide basis.
