Abstract

Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and trends of adult calcaneal fractures treated in our hospital during the last 10 years. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of all inpatients and outpatients with calcaneal fracture who had been treated in our hospital between January 2003 and December 2012.The patients' age, gender, fracture side and AO classification were documented. The data from January 2003 to December 2007 were put into group A and those from January 2008 to December 2012 into group B.The 2 groups were compared to find out the general epidemiological characteristics and trends of the recent 10 years. Results A total 3,881 patients with 4,373 calcaneal fractures were recorded, including 3,306 males (3,754 fractures) and 575 females (619 fractures) with a ratio of male to female of 5.75∶ 1.The injury affected the left side in 1,667 cases, the right side in 1,722 ones, and both sides in 492 ones. The peak age of the fracture was 31 to 40 years.82-C (72.44%) was the most frequent type and 82-B2 (7.34%) the most common subtype. There were 1,977 cases (2,222 fractures) in group A and 1,904 ones (2,151 fractures) in group B.The ratio of male to female was 5.96∶1 in group A and 5.54∶1 in group B.There were no statistically significant differences in gender or fracture side between the 2 groups (P > 0.05).Compared with group A,group B had a significantly higher mean age in male patients, significantly more old patients ≥61 years,a significantly higher proportion of types 82-A and 82-B,and a significantly lower proportion of type 82-C (P < 0.05).Conclusions Males had more calcaneal fracture than females. The calcaneal fractures predominated in patients of 31 to 40 years old.The most frequent type was 82-C.Compared with the first 5 years, the second 5 years witnessed an increased mean age in male patients, more old patients and a decreased trend in the incidence of type 82-C.
