Abstract

This work aimed to describe the epidemiological aspects of Benign Fibro-Osseous Lesions (BFOL) in a Southeast Brazilian population. Sociodemographic and clinical-pathological data were gathered from the archives of two Oral Pathology Services. A total of 182 cases were diagnosed as BFOL (0.93% of all records). Of these, 86 (47.3%) were classified as osseous dysplasia (OD), 57 (31.3%) as fibrous dysplasia (FD), and 39 (21.4%) as central ossifying fibromas. These lesions mostly affected afro-descendant women, with a mean age of 39.1 ±17.30. The mandible was the main affected site (67.6%), except for FD, which commonly appeared in the maxilla. Asymptomatic swelling was the generally cited complaint. The mixed radiographic appearance was most frequently described. In all studies regarding Brazilian patients, OD was the most common BFOL. In this sample, BFOL depicted similar clinical-pathological features, when compared with most of the previously published studies. (Support: PAPE-UNIUBE).
