Abstract

Objective To investigate the prevalence of Adenovirus(ADV) in respiratory infections in cilldren of chaoshan area and study the clinical symptoms associated with it. Methods 2 668 nasopharyngeal aspirates specimens (NPA) were collected from children with respiratory tract infection from July 2012 to June 2016 in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College.Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was applied to detect 10 kinds of viruses including adenovirus (ADV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Human Rhinoviruses(HRV), WU Polyomavirus(WUPyV), human Boca virus (HBoV), influenza virus A, B type (InfA、InfB), parainfluenza virus type 1, 3, (PIV-1、PIV-3), human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The clinical characteristic of these ADV-positive cases were analyzed. Results There were 1 388 samples (52.02%) of the 2 668 NPA specimens were positive for viruses, which included 95(3.53%) cases positive for ADV.ADV infection could occur in a whole year and occurred in children at age of 0-6 years, especially at age of 0-3 years. The clinical symptoms of ADV infection included fever, cough, wheeze and polypnea. The co-infection group, with the increase of the number of the virus, the more obvious symptoms of cough and wheezing.Only 4 cases (4/95, 4.21%) diagnosed as severe pneumonia. Conclusions ADV infection is not in the pandemic stage in chaoshan area from July 2012 to June 2016.ADV co-infected with other virus are common. The clinical manifestation, laboratory examination and imaging examination in children with ADV infection show no specific features. The co-infection groups, with the increase of the number of the virus, the more obvious symptoms of cough and wheezing. The clinical symptoms are generally mild for nearly 4 years of ADV respiratory infection in chaoshan area which has a low incidence of severe pneumonia.
