Abstract

EDDY et al.1 have reported that extracts of rhesus monkey kidney cell cultures produce subcutaneous sarcomas when inoculated into new-born hamsters. Sweet and Hilleman2 have shown that a simian virus (SV40) is present in most rhesus monkey kidney cell cultures although it causes no cytopathogenic effect in them. Cytopathogenic effect is produced, however, in cell cultures of kidneys from African green monkeys. Later, Eddy et al.3 found that similar subcutaneous sarcomas in hamsters can be induced after inoculation of preparations containing SV40.
