Abstract

Spinal cerebellar ataxias (SCA) are a group of heterogenous autosomal dominant inherited disorders characterized by progressive loss of balance, coordination, and non-ataxia related symptoms. While the majority of patients with SCAs typically have an adult onset of symptoms, many children are having genetic testing for these disorders. Some SCAs (such as SCA7) have or may have a childhood onset. Early diagnosis may be important for genetic counselling and can be crucial for prognosis and treatment.
