Abstract
Fossier et al (J Am Coll Cardiol 2022;80:2205, PMID 36456051) investigated the initial mechanisms underlying atrial fibrillation (AF) susceptibility and mitochondrial dysfunction in metabolic cardiomyopathy. Mitochondrial Ca2+ and mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter complex (MCUC) was investigated in right atrial tissue of patients with or without metabolic syndrome (MetS) and in mice fed with a high-fat sucrose diet (HFS). Increased expression of the mitochondrial calcium uptake subunits of the MCUC was associated with impaired mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake in patients and mice fed with HFS.
