Abstract

Eosinophils are prominent in immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions and are regarded as histologic hallmarks of these reactions.1 However, the role of the eosinophil in immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions is not clearly established. Evidence has been presented suggesting that the eosinophil may modulate immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions by inactivating mediators of anaphylaxis, such as histamine,2 slow-reacting substances of anaphylaxis3 and the platelet activating factor.4 Goetzl and associates5 have postulated that one function of the eosinophil is the containment of the inflammation following immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions.
