Abstract

The intradermal injection of a saline extract of the Oriental hornet ( Vespa orientalis) venom sac into ICR white and C-57 black mice ( Mus musculus) and into Charles River rats ( Rattus rattus) induces eosinophilia in the skin in all animals. A second injection given at the same site to C-57 black mice evokes hypersensitivity. The number of eosinophils at the site of injection shows a 50-fold increase over the control, three days after injection. The local eosinophilia is accompanied by eosinopoiesis in the spleen and bone marrow.
