Abstract

The driving force of lake currents was studied using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) deployed at eight sites in Lake Kitaura. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis has been widely used in both meteorology and oceanography. The results of EOF analysis applied to the axial currents (northward component) datasets show that Mode 1, containing 74.9-93.3% of the variance, is highly correlated with wind speed. The effect of the in-flow/out-flow through the Wani River is somewhat apparent in Mode 2. Wind effects on lake currents were evaluated quantitatively. As these results represented actual physical mode, we concluded that EOF analysis was suitable for determining lake current data.
