Abstract

The results of enzyme histochemical investigations of 14 glioblastomas induced in rabbits by the intravenous injections of N-methyl- N-nitrosourea (MNU) are reported. The occurrence and the distribution of 11 enzymes were studied. High activity of acid phosphatase, arylesterase, NADH 2-tetrazoliumoxydoreductase and lactate dehydrogenase was found in all samples and was especially localized in the ctyoplasm of the giant cells. β- d-galactosidase and β- d-glucosidase were present in necrotic and degenerative foci. Glucose- 6-phosphatase and cytochrome oxidase were not detected, but adenosine monophosphatase and succinic dehydrogenase were found in some tumours. It was noteworthy that the glioblastomas of the rabbit exhibited almost no activity of the alkaline phosphatase. The topic pattern, particularly of the hydrolytic enzymes, was distinctly different from the corresponding findings in tumours of the nervous system of the rat also induced by MNU.
