Abstract

The thiamine diphosphate-dependent enzyme 1-deoxy- d-xylulose 5-phosphate synthase from E. coli can use d-erythrose 4-phosphate and d-ribose 5-phosphate as alternative substrates. These reactions were used for the production of 1-deoxy- d-fructose 6-phosphate and 1-deoxy- d-sedoheptulose 7-phosphate and have potential application for the biosynthesis of other 1-deoxysugar phosphates.
