Abstract

Many of us here either have a vested interest in studying DNA synthesis or are considering how seriously to undertake research in the subject. I think DNA synthesis is important and attractive to pursue for several reasons. (1) Interest in biological sciences is in the ascendency, with even wider appeal now than the physical sciences. (2) DNA replication is one of the fundamental processes in all biological systems. (3) Major questions about DNA replication remain to be answered; information is increasing at a rapid and exponential rate and opportunities for resolving these major questions are great. For these reasons I am pleased and grateful that Masamichi Kohiyama and Ian Molineux had the vision and made the effort to organize this school and that NATO has sponsored it.
