Abstract

In this paper, an environmentally friendly Bridgman-Stockbarger technique was used to growth a fluoride single crystal LiYF4: Pr3+ (YLF: Pr3+). Polarized absorption spectra, polarized fluorescence spectra, and fluorescence decay curves were measured at room temperature. A broad emission extending from 0.75 to 1.09 μm was recorded in YLF: Pr3+ by 594 nm excitation. Detailed polarized spectral analyses related to the 1D2 multiplet were carried out based on the modified Judd-Ofelt theory. The relationship between the calculated spectral parameters and the fluorescence spectra for the 1D2 multiplet of Pr3+ ions was discussed. The results imply that the YLF: Pr3+ crystal may be a potential tunable infrared laser gain medium with the 1D2 as an upper level.
