Abstract

Zero pollution is widely understood as the discharge of an effluent that contains no contaminants in concentrations sufficient to result in contravention of receiving water criteria. Zero pollution by any definition can be obtained by: (1) Completely changing industrial production processes; (2) installing complete waste treatment of all effluents; and (3) locating industry in a specially desiggned, environmentally balanced industrial complex (EBIC). Each of these methods is problematic. Such complexes have the advantages of minimizing production costs and adverse environmental impacts. A sugarcane refinery based EBIC has been proposed. Mass balances for the components have been determined. Four major products of the complex are refined sugar, molasses, alcohol, and electrical energy. Other products are utilized within the complex. No external wastes are released to the environment.
