Abstract

Environmental problems induced by acid rain first attracted the concern of scientists in China in the late 1970s. The acid rain-induced problems in soil and groundwater in China show certain characteristic features. Most of the soils that are likely to suffer from the effect of acid rain have small buffering capacities against acid input. Coal combustion is responsible for most of the atmospheric pollution in China, especially in the big cities. If the region is surrounded by mountains and the air transport is weak, the occurrence of acid rain is confined to the local area and the acidity of the rainwater decreases from the center of the emission source outward. For agricultural lands, a variety of management measures can control or remedy soil acidification. For a long time, farmers have applied ashes from straw, grasses, and wood to the land. The potential environmental problems in soil and groundwater caused by acid rain in China are discussed.
