Abstract

The deforestation and degradation of forests in the Global South have become central to current global efforts to address climate change. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) initiative for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) is perhaps the most notable in this regard. The initiative intends to reward participating nations economically in five areas: (1) reducing emissions from deforestation; (2) reducing emissions from forest degradation; (3) conservation of forest carbon stocks; (4) sustainable management of forests; and (5) enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
