Abstract

The powerful Sarychev Peak eruption (Matua Island, Central Kuril Islands) in June 2009 is analyzed on the basis of remote sensing data (satellite images) and ground-based observations carried out in summer 2009. The nature of the eruption and catastrophic impact on ecosystems of the island is described.
