Abstract

The Department of Energy is moving ahead with plans to construct the 40-trillion-eV Superconducting Super Collider and has published draft environmental impact statements for the seven sites DOE is considering. DOE offers no ranking of the sites. Final site selection is scheduled for January 1989, and construction-related activities are slated to begin in autumn 1989. Topics covered in the statements include impact on surface water, groundwater, and air quality; threats to wildlife and other ecological resources; and socioeconomic impact on surrounding communities. The sites, one each in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, vary considerably in how they will be affected. Some, like those in Arizona and Colorado, are in remote parts of the country. So construction and operation of the SSC would have the least effect on people.
