Abstract

AbstractTheoretical and practical studies highlight the advantages of recycling municipal solid waste and construction wastes. In an attempt to lessen the negative environmental impact from solid waste and to enhance sustainability of energy- and resource-intensive construction, significant efforts have been channeled into re-use of solid wastes for environmentally friendly building materials. This study seeks to identify the ways towards more efficient use of municipal solid waste and construction waste as recycled materials for construction industry. The paper discusses possible applications of solid municipal waste and construction waste as substitute materials in the production of sustainable geopolymer composites. Even though inclusion of these fractions in geopolymer composites is found to have a negative effect on composites’ performance characteristics such as strength, processibility and durability, satisfactory performance can be achieved by adding the correct percentage.
