Abstract

The study attempts to assist the US reader in understanding the problems law drafters face in redesigning Poland's environmental impact assessment (EIA) law and in trying to increase the role of the public in development control. The article presents a brief outline of the land use planning system and illustrates the relationship of EIA requirements to this system. Against this background, it describes in detail the current design of the EIA law and expalins the legal framework of public participation in development control. Perspectives of and suggestions for future development of the EIA law in Poland are offered at the conclusion of the study.
