Abstract

By diverting wastewater from the sea to the wastewater treatment, recharge, and reuse plant, the emission of pollutants is considerably reduced and diverted from the sea to air, land, and ground water. The fate of the major pollutants during treatment was determined by means of a mass balance approach, based on long-term wastewater analyses and flow measurements. For a more detailed quantitative analysis of the project's environmental effects, more data are needed on pollutant concentrations in sludge, air, and soil. A comparative analysis of the effect of pollutants on sea water and on ground water was carried out for three major groups of pollutants: organics and nutrients, metals, and bacteria.
