Abstract

AbstractThe island of Syros in Greece is at the start of a major involvement in the tourist industry, while intensive agriculture is already being practised and a revival of its ship‐building industry is being negotiated. The development and maintenance of these and other activities is constrained by the natural resources on the island, such as land, water and energy, and by environmental degradation, the destruction of natural habitats and pollution. This paper outlines the present state of the environment and development on Syros and highlights specific environmental constraints to further economic and social development. The need for environmental resource management is emphasized, to co‐ordinate the efforts of the local authorities and individuals towards the achievement of a balanced level of resource utilization with prospects for sustainability.
