Abstract

This paper proposes a summary measure of the different elements that make up the construct of environmental concern with the ultimate goal of exploring the breadth and social bases of environmentalism in Andalusia (Spain). Categorical principal components analysis, cluster analysis and proportion contrast have been applied to a public opinion survey on ecology and the environment representative of the Andalusian population. The results confirm the proper operationalization of environmental concern through eight facets as well as the broad support for the discourse of sustainability issues among the population. However, this consensus is conditioned by certain demographic profiles and different levels or degrees of environmental concern detected.
