Abstract

Many households in poor regions of the world devote substantial time to the environmental chores of fetching water and gathering fuel. After reviewing what is known about differences in time allocation by gender in such settings and the heavy use of children’s time in meeting these fundamental household needs, this chapter provides an analysis of 2011 data from Tanzania for a sample of households from two villages in rural northern Tanzania. The chapter documents households’ overall use of these environmental goods and describes the division of this labor among household members and how this varies by key characteristics. It focuses particularly on the time of women and of children aged 10–17 and examines in what ways boys’ and girls’ roles differ.
