Abstract

In view of the concerns that environmentally unacceptable levels of PCDDs and PCDFs may result from the incineration of chemical waste which includes PCBs, measurements have been made at and around a chemical waste incinerator in the UK. Techniques for stack gas sampling are discussed, together with methods for unambiguous measurement of 2,3,7,8-TCDD at levels below 0.01 ppt using high resolution GC-MS. Stack gas samples were collected during the combustion of differing chemical wastes, and soil and dust samples were collected both near the incinerator site, and at remote locations which provided background data.
