Abstract

There are a lot of controversies regarding the energy, environmental and economic balances of biofuel production. The outbreak of biofuels might deeply alter agricultural and environmental policies. However, the question of the regulation of agricultural and environmental policies must still be addressed, with even greater emphasis. On the one hand, the high prices observed on the agricultural world markets (partly) hinge on the subsidies (and all forms of supports) given to the biofuel programs in many countries. On the other, the environmental issue will need to be considered more closely, as the energy crops are bound to be produced in a very intensive manner in order to reach the prominent objectives of the biofuel policies.
