Abstract

The use of strategic planning has become widespread among many organizations, including hospitals and hospital pharmacy departments. A key step in the process is a thorough examination of the environment as perceived by the manager. This study evaluates a model to be used by hospital pharmacy directors in the environmental analysis. Using responses from 227 directors, the model was determined to be a useful tool for examining threats and opportunities facing the department and for providing an indication of the overall environment. This information may be useful in presenting the environmental analysis of the pharmacy department to hospital administrators and other institutional decision makers.
