Abstract

Marine biofouling has become an urgent problem in the field of marine engineering equipment worldwide. In this study, an environment-friendly antifouling coating using pre-alloyed Cu bearing stainless steel powder as raw material was developed by cold spraying. The experimental results showed that pre-alloyed powder coating effectively inhibits the adhesion of marine fouling organism Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Due to the even distribution of Cu, it had better corrosion resistance and lower release rate of Cu ions compared with mixed powder coating, which made it appear protective of the marine environment. In addition, the coating has better wear resistance than commercial self-polishing copolymer coatings, which has the potential to become a new long-life marine antifouling coating.
