Abstract
Increasing private ownership of cars continues to create increasing pollution, noise and congestion from traffic. A worsening of the urban environment results, especially in areas of high traffic density. The car is, however, filling an increasingly important role in contemporary society, permitting the freer exercise of choice, greater variety and more fulfilment in life. It may even be the most economical transport system. Examination shows that the environmental objections to traffic and the car could be largely removed by an improved design of vehicle, by improved town design, and by a greater responsibility amongst drivers. These measures could be an effective alternative to traffic limitation as a means of safeguarding or even improving the urban environment.
