Abstract Theoretical evolutionary tracks for the stage of core helium burning have previously been unable to explain the detailed distribution in the H-R diagram of the red giants in NGC 1866, a cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Models calculated with improved envelope opacities develop extremely deep convective at the tip of the red-giant branch. The convective envelope modifies the hydrogen distribution in the region near the hydrogen-burning shell, which leads to core-helium-burning evolution in better agreement with the observations.
